These houseowners had been living in their Dutch house for a while now, but where still missing that ‘homey feel’. They wished to renovate their kitchen, dining area and living space in the style that reminded them of their homeland.
Kitchen design
Inverting the original floorplan was the concept for this project. By moving the new kitchen towards the window we could create an U-shaped kitchen with sufficient countertop space. Great for real food lovers like this family! In addition, moving the kitchen meant also taking advantage of all the natural light coming into this space.
There was a preference for a more traditional look in combination with easy to clean materials. By choosing kitchen cabinets in warm white, combined with a warm oak countertop and sage green tiles the result is a welcoming and natural atmosphere.
Living room and dining space design
With a large open space it is easy to create a lot of little zones in different styles. My personal preference is creating one big piece of furniture with a multifunctional use. It gives the room some definition and style without loosing the openness of it’s space.
Extending the kitchen cabinets into the living room results in a dining bench with plenty of extra storage space and a matching sideboard in the living space. It keeps the look calm and cohesive, maximizing the useable square meters of this space at the same time.
The result? By choosing natural materials and colours this space feels warm and welcoming. The perfect ‘homey atmosphere’ for making this family feel at home, while living abroad!
